For My Friends

Spendthrift friendships once ravelled and unravelled

Carefree leisurely as a journey without a plan;

Easy-come, easy-go, there was a while I travelled

Lightly, made my friends catch as catch can.

Gradually the casual twisted the precious weave,

This tissue of feeling in which I’ve grown;

Though I follow a single thread, I must believe

That bound to the whole we never drift alone.

Drifted crossed, matted fibres long inwrought,

Friendships prove the fabric of a common story,

The web which takes the strain of every thought,

Shares the fray or stain, joys in our glory,

Interwoven, at last I dare to move without misgiving,

I touch the invisible, love this gauze of living.
